Why does light travel and not darkness?

Why is it assumed that heat travels from a hot object to a cold object, as opposed to saying that coldness travels from a colder object to a hotter object? Is it possible that we are mistaken just like earlier science thought that protons were the ones that were involved in reactions between atoms, when more recent studies proved that it was actually the electrons were the ones moving?
